When you are faced with the task of photographing coins, you need to find a splitter for constant lighting, and if using a flash, direct the light stream upwards. Otherwise, the pictures will not be of high quality, as the coins will glare.

Step 1
Choose a camera and interchangeable lenses. In most cases, it is best to choose an analog medium format camera and shoot on slide film. If this is not possible, opt for a digital SLR camera. When choosing a lens, give preference to optics with good aperture. Ideal - when the relative aperture of the lens is 1, 4-2. With such aperture indicators, the images will be as detailed as possible with high resolution. As for the type of lens, experts recommend staying on a "portrait lens" with a focus of about 70 mm. When photographing very small coins, it is better to take a lens with a long focus (from about 135 mm).
Step 2
Think over the background on which you will build the composition. Most often, photographers prefer to use white or black for shooting coins. On the first, silver coins look better, on the second - gold. You can also choose any objects as the background. But when using them, it is better if they are "out of focus".
Step 3
Decide whether you will use constant or variable light bulbs as lighting fixtures. Depending on this, select the type of light diffusers. Without them, photographing coins is extremely problematic: the surface glares, which makes it almost impossible to achieve uniform illumination in the picture. If you settled on lamps of constant light - place them around the composition. Thus, you will have two modeling sources - front and back. With flashlights selected, point them up or at least at an angle relative to the subject. In this case, the picture will be three-dimensional.
Step 4
Look for the point from which you will photograph. As a rule, the most successful angle is obtained by shooting the coins from the bottom and slightly from the side. But no one will give specific recommendations here, because too much depends on lighting and composition.
