How to make a bow and arrow

It is necessary

  • Materials:
  • Straight branch of ash, hazel or mountain ash 100 - 120 cm long
  • Lavsan cord, or thick linen or silk thread - 150 cm
  • Reed stalks by number of arrows
  • Thick thread or twine
  • BF glue, casein or nitrocellulose
  • Wax candle
  • Soft rag
  • If the bowstring is made of linen or silk - liquid wax or resin
  • Bird feathers
  • Instruments:
  • File
  • Knife
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

Step 1

Take the branch intended for the onion. The central branch should be as thick as your two fingers, or slightly thinner. Using a knife and sandpaper, make the branch taper equally from the middle to the ends. Sand the surface with a file and sandpaper. Determine the center and mark it with a knot, which you will remove at the end of the work. Measure from the center 0.5 cm in each direction and wrap from these points 10 cm in each direction with thick thread or twine, smeared with glue. This will be the bow handle. Dry the resulting base within 24 hours.

At the ends of the mustache of the bow, make notches for attaching the bowstring.

Step 2

Take the lavsan cord. Fasten it firmly to one of the bow's mustache. Pull the cord so that, being attached to the second mustache of the bow, it gives a deflection from the central part of the bow to the bowstring of 15-16 cm. Mark the required amount of cord with a margin for fastening and cut. Make a loop for attaching, taking into account that the loop will need to be removed.

Use a few turns of colored thread to mark the center of the string.

Pull the bowstring.

Step 3

Take a stem of dried reeds. Measure 75 cm and cut. On the back of the boom, make an incision no more than 1cm deep for the string.

Step 4

Take a strip of rubber 15 cm long and 2 cm wide. Place it on the bow of the boom so that it forms a loop about 1 cm from the tip of the boom. Use twine or tape to attach it to the strip to the boom. Wrap duct tape or twine so that it completely overlaps the rubber band on the boom shaft. This is called humanization.

Step 5

Feather the arrow. Take 2 bird feathers and cut them lengthwise so that you get two identical halves. Feathers should be from one wing, and attach the same half from each to the arrow. The second halves will go to the second arrow. Attach the halves of the feathers to the tail of the arrow with thread and glue.
