To draw a beautiful portrait, you need not only to know the anatomy, but also to be able to realistically convey the facial features and personality of the model on the canvas. For drawing, you can take colored pencils or pastels and tinted paper.

It is necessary

  • - drawing paper;
  • - a simple pencil;
  • - eraser;
  • - colour pencils;
  • - pastel.

Instructions

Step 1

Place the sitter in a comfortable chair. His face should be well lit. Set the background to a solid color so that nothing distracts you from the model.

Step 2

Take a piece of paper and place it vertically. For the preliminary drawing, you will need a simple medium-soft pencil. In order for the composition to be harmonious, the face should be depicted in proportion to the size of the sheet so that there is free space around.

Step 3

On a piece of paper, mark the dimensions of the face with thin lines and draw an oval. Depending on the selected angle (full-face view or three-quarters of a turn), draw a center line that will pass through the bridge of the nose. Then sketch out subtle auxiliary horizontal lines for the construction of the eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. Use thin strokes to mark the eyelids, the wings of the nose, the corners of the lips. Check again all proportions with the original.

Step 4

Start drawing parts of the face. First outline the brow ridges, draw the eyebrows. Add guidelines for the eyeball and eyelids. From the inner corner of the eye, draw vertical lines downward. At the level of these lines, as a rule, the wings of the nose are located. Start drawing the nose itself from the eyebrows using two arched lines that smoothly flow into the lines of the side edges of the nose. These lines should end with the tip of the nose, which looks like a wide droplet. Find the nasolabial triangle and start drawing lips from it.

Step 5

After you have drawn the face, depict the neck and hair in the form of a hairstyle or loose strands. Don't paint all the hair, show the foreground in enough detail. Be sure to depict the accessories available.

Step 6

After you complete the preliminary drawing with a simple pencil, start working with colored pencils or pastels. To make the portrait look realistic, you need to bring out the volume with the help of light and shadow. Start shading from the lightest areas. Remember to leave the highlights unpainted. If you are working with pastels, use a feathering technique to achieve smooth color transitions. To make the work complete, select a path in some places.
