Travel essay is a journalistic genre in which both a professional and a novice journalist can prove themselves. It belongs to those genres that stood at the origins of journalism and has some distinctive features.

Step 1
Set a goal for your travel story. Why are you writing it? Maybe to tell people what excited you? Or maybe you want to reflect the political or cultural situation in this or that country in this way? The goals can be very different, so they need to be formulated in advance and constantly kept in mind.
Step 2
Explore the travel stories of other authors. Many famous writers such as Pushkin, Radishchev, Novikov, and later Ilf and Petrov created wonderful travel sketches. Let their work be your benchmark.
Step 3
Take a trip. It is impossible to write a travel essay simply by fantasizing. This is exactly the genre that assumes your personal presence in the described place. It is not so important where you go - on a trip around the world or to a neighboring village. The main thing is that you should see with your own eyes what you are writing about, experience it on your own skin.
Step 4
Make some important notes as you travel. You don't have to sit down and write the entire essay right away. Just memorize events, interesting moments, details of the local flavor that you noticed, note what you liked and did not like. Remember that you should not focus your attention on any particular person - this is already beyond the concept of a classic travel sketch.
Step 5
Take photos. Human memory is not very durable, and in order to write a really high-quality and interesting essay, it is better to refresh memories. And in this you will be helped not only by your notes, but also by photographs. You can also keep an audio diary - write down on the recorder some things that excited you, caught your attention.
Step 6
Collect all your pre-recordings and snapshots and study them carefully. Now write a full-fledged quality text. Set it aside for a while and come back to it again. You may want to add something to it, to modify something in it.
