Biography facts
The future famous director was born in the United States in the fall of 1942. The quarter where the family lived was called "Little Italy". Mainly Italians who came from Sicily settled there. The area was notorious and considered one of the most criminal in America.
In the future, inspired by his memories of the years spent in these places, Scorsese made several films, the heroes of which were former Italians who came to the United States in search of a new life. In 1974, Scorsese's documentary "Italo-American" was released, in which Martin's parents became the main characters. They talked about their life in America, as well as the history of their Sicilian family.
The boy suffered from severe asthma from an early age and therefore spent most of his time at home. Martin's only entertainment was going to the movies for all the families. He practically had no friends, because he rarely appeared on the street.
The boy's parents had nothing to do with art. The family was very religious and, perhaps, that is why the father and mother insisted that the son go to seminary. But Martin did not become a priest. Already in his school years, he became interested in creativity and, sitting at home, painted a lot, composed his first works, where he carefully prescribed the character of each hero.
After leaving school, he entered the university at the Faculty of Arts, where he began to study literature, drama and cinema.
After graduating from university in 1964, Scorsese earned a bachelor's degree in film production. Two years later, he became a master, studying at New York University's School of Film. Already in his student years, Martin began filming his first short films, receiving good reviews from film critics. Many said that the young man had a great future and he would certainly become a great cinematographer.
Creative way
At the age of twenty-five, Scorsese directed his first serious film, Who Knocks at My Door? Then he found people who became his faithful assistants for many years.
One of the famous film critics wrote that a new director appeared in American cinema, who would soon go down in the history of cinema as the greatest master of his craft. And he was not mistaken. Scorsese truly became a great director, who has been repeatedly compared to the legendary Stanley Kubrick.
The film "Wicked Streets" brought wide popularity and fame to Martin. It was with this picture that his long-term friendship with Robert De Niro began. Shortly before filming began, their first meeting took place at one of the parties. After talking a little, the young people found out that they grew up in the same area and even met once in a club at a dance.
De Niro was invited to shoot Scorsese's film and played one of the main roles in the film. The film premiered in 1973 and grossed over $ 3 million at the box office.
The next collaboration between Martin and Robert was the film Taxi Driver. The script for the film was written by Paul Schrader. De Niro again starred in the film as Travis Buckle, a former Marine who went through the Vietnam War. After returning to his homeland, he goes to work as a taxi driver, and then decides to start fighting crime.
The film "Taxi Driver" received recognition from viewers, especially the younger generation, and soon became a cult film. The film grossed over $ 28 million and received many nominations and film awards. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Palme d'Or grand prize.
True, not all film critics were unanimous. Playwright T. Williams, who headed the festival's jury at that time, accused the director of excessive demonstration of violence and cruelty, of an abundance of bloody scenes. But this did not prevent the film from receiving the highest award of the festival and a number of other prestigious nominations, including the Oscar.
Scorsese has collaborated with Robert De Niro in two more films: Nicefellas and Casino.
Another actor with whom Scorsese worked for many years was Leonardo DiCaprio. He played excellently in the films: "Gangs of New York", "Isle of the Damned", "The Wolf of Wall Street". Many film critics noted that DiCaprio became a real “new muse” of the director, who managed to embody vivid images of the main characters on the screen. The joint work of DiCaprio and Scorsese brought success and fame to both.
The director continues his collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio today. In the coming years, several new works by Scorsese will be released at once, where DiCaprio played the main roles: "The Devil in the White City", "Roosevelt", "The Moonlight Killers".
Scorsese is one of the most award-winning directors of our time. He received twelve Oscars for his work. For more than forty years the actors who appear in his films have received the most prestigious film awards, in particular the Oscar.
In 2019, the director's new work will be released - the crime drama The Irishman. This film again starred his longtime friend Robert De Niro, as well as Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Harvey Peitel, Joe Pesci, Stephen Graham. The expectation rating for this movie is approaching 100%.
The film tells the story of Frank Sheeran, nicknamed "The Irishman". He is credited with killing more than two dozen gangsters and Jimmy Hoffa, a prominent US trade union leader who disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
