On May 16, the annual international film festival, considered one of the most prestigious in the world, kicked off in the city of Cannes (Cannes). Every spring, since 1946, both eminent actors and directors and newcomers to the film industry come to the south of France.
In 2012, the 65th Cannes Festival is traditionally held on the Croisette. It is there that the Palace of Festivals and Congresses is located, on the steps of which the famous red carpet is spread. Today, guests are also greeted by a huge poster depicting Marilyn Monroe blowing out a birthday cake: in this way, the organizers of the festival honored the memory of the film star, whose death has already passed 50 years.
The grand opening of the film festival was attended by world celebrities: actors Alec Baldwin, Diana Kruger, Jane Fonda, "stars" of the series Eva Longoria ("Desperate Housewives") and Tim Roth ("Theory of Lies"), model Eva Herzigova and many others. Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton were in the spotlight on the first night. All of them played in the film, which was honored to open the official program of the Cannes Film Festival 2012. "Kingdom of the Full Moon" is a family melodrama with elements of comedy and with references to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", about introverted teenagers falling in love with each other and escaping from the summer camp. In contrast, the next picture shown in the official program was the bloody drama of the Egyptian director "Battlefield".
For 11 days, the members of the jury, among whom in 2012 were Ewan McGregor, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Diane Kruger and others, together with film critics and directors, will watch films that are nominated for the Palme d'Or in the main program. This is a crime drama about the Great Depression in the USA of the 30s "The Drunkest District in the World", the French-Belgian drama about the disabled "Rust and Bone", the Italian thriller "Reality" and more than two dozen films from all over the world. Russia together with Belarus presents at Cannes 2012 the war drama In the Fog, based on the story by Vasil Bykov. The budget of the film about the trackman, whom the guerrillas suspect of collaborating with the Nazis, was two million dollars.
In addition to the main program, the 2012 Cannes Film Festival will screen ten short films made by students of directing departments of theater universities and schools from different countries. There will also be screening of films in the "Special Look" nomination, directed by British actor Tim Roth.
On May 27, the grand closing of the 65th Cannes Film Festival and the announcement of the winners in the nominations "Best Actor", "Best Actress", "Golden Camera", "Best Screenplay" will take place. The President of the Jury, Italian director Nanni Moretti will present the best feature-length and short films with the main award of the Cannes Film Festival - Palme d'Or.
